Baggy pants, corduroy, and ruffles – sounds like back in the day? Today we celebrate the trends of the past with style, confidence, and a touch of ease. This is how retro becomes a look that makes us women over 50 simply shine.
Memories of our childhood – fashion as a zeitgeist
Our generation 50plus is shaped by five decades full of trends. To understand today’s fashion, we look back to the time when we barely looked over the edge of the stroller. Back then, we were influenced by our mothers' style: the women’s movement on the rise, pantsuits with a feminine touch, maxi dresses made of shiny fabrics, eye-catching blouses with flounces, bows, and fringes. Flowing materials like viscose and silk conquered wardrobes – and cord was simply everywhere.
Outdated? Perhaps we cringe today when we see “cord” or “flounce.” These pieces remind us too much of images we had as children: the mother in an apron at the stove. Women over 50 really seemed old back then – very different from how we are today.

Why we should reconsider 70s fashion – modern trends 2025/26
The good news: Many style features of the 70s are experiencing a renaissance – just as we remember them, but reinterpreted and modernized. This makes fashion not nostalgic, but current and powerful.
- Bohemian & Maxi Dresses are one of the big trends for 2025. Flowing maxi dresses made of satin with or without ruffles and flounces – elements we already know from the 70s – are making a big comeback. They combine romance with comfort and express feminine beauty.
- Flared & Wide-Leg Pants, often high-cut, made of cord or velvety and shiny materials are taking over the runway. They replace skinny jeans with more volume and freedom. Palazzo pants and Marlene trousers as long as possible are combined with classic blouses and oversized blazers or short jackets for a clear statement.
- Boots: everything is possible, just not boring; skinny boots best knee-high made of smooth leather or suede, cowboy boots or ankle boots in brown tones.
- Color Palette & Patterns: Earth tones like greige (a combination of gray and beige), camel, olive, and dark brown tones dominate. There are also psychedelic prints, paisley, floral patterns, and occasionally metallic effects for a wow factor.
- Sustainability & Slow Fashion: Today, it’s not just about what is fashionable, but how it is made. Low-impact materials, local production, transparency – all of this fits perfectly with vintage pieces from the 70s and will accompany us for a long time.
These trends show: The fashion of the past is not outdated – it is a resource we can draw from today.
Freedom in fashion – today more than ever
The beauty is: We no longer have to blindly follow trends today. We can choose. We can decide which pieces suit us and what stage we want to enter with our style. Fashion is today an expression of our personality – and this freedom is a gift.
A pair of corduroy pants, for example, looks modern, powerful, and elegant when combined with a white blouse and a stylish tie. Add a pair of sneakers and maybe a belt in earth tones – and you have a look that makes us feel confident. Metallic or shiny elements can be used sparingly, e.g., in accessories or a short top when you feel like adding some glamour.

My tip: Favorite pieces with history – combine them in a modern way
- Maxi Dress from the category Dresses & Skirts – flowing fabric in solid soft earth tones: Can be combined in every season! Sometimes with an oversized sweater, sometimes with a poncho or just a narrow belt and delicate jewelry. Pair it with boots, high heels, or sneakers, just as you feel.
- Wide Corduroy Pants ("Pants") in warm earth tones: Combined with a white blouse and oversized blazer, it looks modern and powerful.
- Ruffle Blouse from "Blouses & Tunikas": Ideal for adding a playful touch to your outfit. Wear it with simple pants to make it the highlight of the look.
- Statement Jacket or Poncho: Worn over a maxi dress or shirt + pants, it adds drama to any look without being over the top.
- Accessories – Scarf, Hat, Bag, Jewelry – they give the outfit the finishing touch: a touch of retro, but absolutely stylish.
